Morning, Noon & Night! 2007-2009 Alex with our local Independent State MP member for Nicklin Peter Wellington Alex with national award-winning retailer, author & motivational speaker Barry Bull Alex & Christine Jones from Drysdales Funerals launch ‘Nambour Safe’. These two also have something else in common: They share the same birthday - New Years Eve! Alex presenting Nambour Butcher, Paul & his wife Kim at Queen Street Meats with their prize for selling the most Candy Cane raffle tickets at the Nambour Christmas Festival Initiated by the Chamber, these Famils showcased 3 local businesses in one night to highlight what their business had to offer with the aim to promote referrals between businesses, keeping business in town & encouraging more residents to shop local. 30 local business people attended the Currie St ‘Fabulous Famil’ after hours in Nambour We first visited Nambour Retravision, where most people were shocked to discover they also sold furniture! One lucky person won a brand new MP3 player in the raffle. Next stop was Carpet Options, where Alex showed us his great range of carpet, vinyl, timber & tiles & answered many questions & someone won a brand new rug in the raffle. We networked, nibbled on yummy finger food from Thai Connexions nearby & grabbed a glass of wine. So many people had never been in these 3 stores before & were amazed at the range of products they all had to offer. Our last stop was The Scent Shack & again we all learned so much about essential oils, foot massage & the healing properties of their best selling rock salt lamps, one of which was the lucky last raffle prize! A great night was had by all. After 5 years of volunteering as our Chamber Treasurer, Jackie Martin from Currie Street Denture Clinic passed the baton on to Julie-Ann Heller from Input Technologies. At a breakfast meeting at the Club Hotel, Alex presented Jackie with a bouquet of flowers & a Certificate of Appreciation for her years of work for the Nambour Chamber. Jackie is still the Treasurer for the Sunshine Coast Show Society - also a volunteer position! Karen Pickering was Secretary of the Nambour Chamber when Alex was President & assisted greatly with correspondence & organising large events such as ‘Meet the Candidates’ prior to the Council election The Nambour Chamber Committee Immediate Past President Christine Jones was a great asset to Alex as he stepped into the President’s role of the Nambour Chamber. Christine stayed on as Vice President & they quickly forged a solid working relationship that enabled the Chamber to rapidly move forward & achieve many goals in a short time frame. Anzac Day 2009 was very hot & sultry but instead of taking a day off & relaxing, the Chamber stalwarts were there to join the local community, carry the banner & carry on the tradition of taking part in the Anzac Day March—paying their respects at the memorial service where we laid a wreath on behalf of all Chamber members Launching the Nambour Christmas Festival, a free community event for the whole family, which attracted over 3000 people to the heart of Nambour for a festive night out of food, fun, markets kid’s rides, multi-draw raffles & a range of music & entertainment. On a shoestring budget with a core team of locals who put in countless volunteer hours, the Festival was such a huge success, the Chamber even surprised itself! Peter Clark from Nambour Futures & Alex on behalf of Nambour Futures & the Nambour Chamber collaborated on staging the Back to Nambour Festival & the instigation of the Moonlight Markets in August. ![]() ![]() ![]() Working Bee -Australia Day Jan 2009. No rest for the wicked! With the temperature soaring, the Chamber team patched, sanded, rolled & painted the Chamber office, giving it a makeover & a more professional look. L to R: Alex, Tracey, Brent, Julie-Ann & Jodie(Sue was our support crew & took the shot) We all went home for a clean up & a rest then met up later at the Club Hotel for dinner to celebrate! A great team effort & a very hot but fun day! Feature wall colours matched our logo! Chamber Christmas Party 2007. Sue & Alex enjoyed a great
night out with 30 Chamber members aboard the famous ‘Mooloolaba Seafood Cruise’ as we cruised along the canals after dark. As you can see, being President of the Nambour Chamber of Commerce & running your own business is a juggling act - but a rewarding one! “A Big Thank you to Alex Blake from the outgoing Chamber Executive committee: From 2007 to 2009, as the Chamber of Commerce Committee members we met regularly & Alex as President led the team in organising functions, events & seminars, hosting networking breakfasts & dinners. he personally attended countless meetings with Council, Nambour Futures, other Chambers & local MP’s to discuss relevant issues affecting the town, always advocating on behalf of the local business community. He presented awards to businesses & local schools, initiated famils to showcase businesses after hours, wrote columns & articles for the local newspaper & hosted the ‘Meet the Candidates’ night prior to the local Sunshine Coast Council elections & co-hosted the launch of the ‘Nambour Safe campaign with Christine Jones. He had the foresight to have the Chamber website completely redesigned so it could be utilised as a proper communication hub & promotional online presence for Nambour businesses. Alex represented the Chamber at many community events such as taking part in the Anzac Day March & laying a wreath at the service & was a driving force behind the success of the Nambour Christmas Festival & Back to Nambour events—all while running his business, mentoring others in business, attending & assisting with his Rotary commitments & still finding time somehow to keep in touch, visit & spend quality time with his family & friends. Alex Blake is a quiet achiever, who doesn’t go looking for accolades - he just gets in there & gets things done. He wears a number of hats & takes each role seriously, whether it’s exceeding the expectations of his customers in his business, or contributing to the local community, Alex is an inspiration, an all rounder & just a great bloke! Alex is to be commended, for he has done so much for Nambour businesses & the local community in a very short time. From the entire committee, we appreciate your time, effort energy & enthusiasm, your wise counsel, calm diplomatic approach & the ability to still laugh & find the rainbow in the rain cloud. Thanks a mill Alex! You’re a legend.” by Tracey Campbell |
